GLENWOOD CANYON, COLORADO
Hailed as a civil engineering masterpiece when it opened in the 1970s, the Glenwood Canyon stretch of I-70 winds up this incredibly deep and narrow canyon, alongside a major rail line and river. The space available for an interstate highway simply wasn't there, so engineers imaginatively stacked the opposing lanes to squeeze through the canyon while taking up less space. They even worked in a bicycle trail, below and to the right of the roadway. It is truly a beautiful roadway in a magnificent setting. "Bucket-List" stuff, for sure! These photos were taken as we were heading back toward Denver, driving eastbound, going uphill through the canyon.
