MOUNT WASHINGTON WEATHER | SEPTEMBER, 2019
GEEK ALERT :: The following is for all you hard-core weather geeks (and inhospitable broadcast antenna location fanatics). There are a lot of things, human and otherwise, that brave the elements up on Mt. Washington. We got a pretty good look at most of 'em, but didn't know you had to schedule weather observatory tours in advance. Bummer. Oh, well, a good reason to come back (and ride the Cog Railway up the mountain, next time!) There's a nice museum inside the visitor center at the top of the mountain. The weather center is staffed 24/7/365, NOT by National Weather Service folks, but by contract weather enthusiasts, researchers and college professors and students who have kept this cold and windy outpost going for nearly 100 years. The facility is funded by various research grants, and these days, actually makes a sizeable bit of its money off royalties earned from stress-testing winter weather clothing and gear. Apparently, if that REI parka has withstood a winter on Mt. Washington, it can withstand anything (and, it earns marketable "bragging rights," too ;) ...
