» Parker at Mock Trial Competition | February, 2011
Mock Trial is an extracurricular exercise where students are given the facts of a made-up legal case (which often bears more than a passing resemblance to a real one), and must prepare to present as either the prosecution or defense, in front of a real judge in the County Judicial Center.
In some rounds they are the prosecution; in others, the defense. Every aspect of Mock Trial follows established legal principles and processes -- so they have a lot to learn while preparing, and they are scored not only on how well they adhere to those conventions, but also on the quality (and ultimate success!) of their legal arguments.
Parker had TWO roles -- for the defense, he played the Defendant, "Kiffen Van Der Lame," a young, wealthy Dutch globe-trotter accused of wire fraud and extortion. For the prosecution, he played an Expert Witness -- a psychologist testifying about Van Der Lame's mental competency to stand trial.
This all took weeks of preparation and rehearsal; when they get to the Mock Trial competition, they are up against an opposing team from another area high school who, like them, has prepared to argue the same case in either the defensive or prosecutorial roles. Parker's team advanced to the third round (meaning, they presented their case three times in one day; twice as the defense; once as the prosecution).
